It’s really nice to be in the countryside

Valvasorjev trg

Thursday, 14 July, Friday, 15 July, and Saturday, 16 July; from 6 to 10 p.m.

Ethnographic event by the MOŽNAR Association

It’s really nice to be in the countryside – the scene in front of the bank will become a village where the members of the Možnar Association with guests will show customs and habits from the local countryside. The scene will also include houses where you can buy local goods and products made by local craftsmen, who will also show their crafts and skills as part of the Street Happening.

This year, at the 10th anniversary of the Anzek march and at the 20th anniversary of St. Martin’s Day in Laško, we will focus on folk musicians, folk music instruments and the patron saint. It will be very lively in the ethno village: Folk musicians, singers, dancers and other performers will also be joined by the Laško Brass Band, the Mayor and this year’s wedding couple. The programme will take place from 6 to 10 p.m.; the pub and the houses will be open until midnight.

“Let’s play!” (Thursday, 14 July)

Folk musicians are the carriers of traditional art and folk performance – they are also songwriters, singers and storytellers. Folk musicians were often cottagers and craftsmen that tried to earn some extra money for their survival with folk music. One of these folk musicians was also Vrhovski Anzek, and at the tenth anniversary of the march in his honour (Anzek march) folk musicians will be presented. Performances under the title “Let’s play!” will be performed by the societies Kulturno društvo Strelska četa Mala Breza, Kulturno društvo Vrh nad Laškim, Kulturno društvo ofirovci in koledniki, Kulturno društvo Lipa Rečica, the Laško Brass Band, and local craftsmen.

“From scythes to drums, from bark to horns” (Friday, 15 July)

Slovenian folk singers used to play on folk instruments like cymbal, fiddle, zither, pan flute, pipe, bagpipes, tambura, clarinet… Older and simpler instruments were made by the musicians themselves, more demanding instruments were made by special craftsmen. The selection and availability of instruments changed through time and different musical influences. But there are still some occasions when we can use everyday objects as musical instruments. Performances under the title “From scythes to drums, from bark to horns” will be performed by the societies Kulturno Društvo Vrh nad Laškim, Konjerejsko društvo Vrh nad Laškim, Kulturno društvo Šentrupert, Kulturno društvo Strelska četa Mala Breza, and local craftsmen.

“Let Saint Martin bless it!” (Saturday, 16 July)

Saint Martin is the patron saint of Laško. At the 20th anniversary of St. Martin’s Day in Laško, the Saturday’s performance will be dedicated to this popular saint. “On Saint Martin’s Day, everybody celebrates!” Some are eating, others are already in the cellar, some still have some unfinished business and have to settle their debts and talk to their hired men and women, others are waiting for herders to come back home, and young lads are being drafted… Performances under the title “Let Saint Martin bless it!” will be performed by the societies Kulturno društvo Anton Tanc Marija Gradec, Kulturno društvo Prežihov Voranc Jurklošter, and local craftsmen.
